Bangladeshi President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Monday ordered the release of jailed former prime minister and key opposition leader Khaleda Zia, hours after her arch-rival Sheikh Hasina was ousted and the military took power.

Khaleda Zia’s Release After High-Level Meeting
President Shahabuddin’s press team announced that a meeting led by him had “unanimously decided to free BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia immediately”.The meeting included Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman, naval and air force leaders, and top opposition figures from the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami.
Student Protesters Freed, and Formation of Interim Government
The meeting also decided to release all those arrested during the student protests. Earlier, Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced that Sheikh Hasina had resigned and that the military would establish a caretaker government.

Khaleda Zia, 78, is in poor health and confined to hospital after she was sentenced to 17 years in prison for graft in 2018.
