Arvind Kejriwal to argue own case in Delhi HC next week

Arvind Kejriwal, accompanied by his wife Sunita Kejriwal, reached the Delhi High Court on Monday amid strong speculation that he would argue his own case. Soon after, the AAP national convenor confirmed that he will present arguments on Thursday on his plea seeking recusal of Justice Swarn Kanta Sharma in the alleged excise policy case. Notably, his appearance with his wife drew attention as the case remains in focus.

During the hearing, Arvind Kejriwal told the court that he would argue the application himself. This move is significant, as senior political leaders rarely argue their own cases in court. As a result, the decision has increased public and political interest in the matter. Now, observers expect closer attention during the upcoming hearings.

Recusal plea and court proceedings

In the meantime, the High Court asked the Central Bureau of Investigation to respond to Kejriwal’s plea. He wants Justice Sharma to step aside from hearing the agency’s appeal. Specifically, the appeal challenges a trial court order that discharged him and 22 others. Earlier, Kejriwal raised concerns about possible bias. He had also asked the Chief Justice to reassign the case to another bench. However, the court rejected that request and said the allocation followed the roster system.

Subsequently, the court noted the recusal plea and issued notice to the CBI. The bench then asked Arvind Kejriwal about his legal representation. In response, he confirmed that he would argue the case himself. After that, the court listed the matter for April 13. On that day, both sides will present detailed arguments, making it a key stage in the case.

Arvind Kejriwal bias claims and developments

Meanwhile, Kejriwal said he has a genuine concern about a fair hearing. He pointed to earlier court observations and argued that they suggested a pre-formed opinion. On the other hand, the Central Bureau of Investigation opposed his claims. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta called the allegations baseless and serious.

Earlier, the court had fixed April 6 for the hearing but later moved it to April 13. At the same time, Kejriwal withdrew his plea from the Supreme Court that sought transfer of the case. Previously, a trial court discharged Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and others. The court said the CBI’s material did not show even a prima facie case. Therefore, this ruling now forms the core of the dispute, as the agency continues to challenge it in the High Court.
