Nitish Kumar’s decision dealt a significant setback to the alliance’s chances, particularly in Bihar, the sole Hindi-belt state where INDIA allies held power. In the early months of 2023, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar extensively journeyed through cities, uniting conflicting opposition groups to form an alliance strategy that has consistently contributed to Kumar’s enduring career.
According to reports, the main factor behind this decision is a lack of coordination within the INDIA bloc, specifically with the Congress during the crisis. Leaders have voiced criticism against the Congress, pointing out delays in seat-sharing discussions and the failure to present Nitish Kumar as the leader of the opposition alliance.

Kumar conducted discussions with President of Congress, Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi.
During the crucial phase of forming seat agreements, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, along with his deputy Tejaswi Yadav, collaborated with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Uddhav Thackeray, Sharad Pawar, and others.
Nitish Kumar dealt a severe setback to the alliance’s future, particularly in Bihar, as he joined hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party, forsaking the Congress and his Left allies who were in power in the only Hindi-belt state where INDIA allies held sway.
