Priyanka Gandhi’s first contest in elections from Wayanad

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, a member of the Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty, is set to make her electoral debut in the Wayanad by-election. Rahul Gandhi has chosen to keep the Raebareli seat and relinquish Wayanad. Rahul emerged victorious in both constituencies during the recent Lok Sabha Elections 2024.

In India, candidates can contest from multiple constituencies, but they can only represent one seat in Parliament at a time. With the Wayanad seat now vacant, the Congress party needed to nominate a new candidate for the upcoming bypoll.

Following a meeting of the Congress party’s top leadership at party president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence in New Delhi on Monday, June 17, the decision was made to nominate Congress general secretary and Rahul’s sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, as the candidate from Wayanad.

Robert Vadra expressed his desire to enter active politics after Priyanka Gandhi confirmed her candidacy for the Wayanad by-elections. He stated that his ambition has always been to engage in politics and that he had hoped Priyanka would first establish herself as a Member of Parliament.

“I have always had aspirations to be actively involved in politics. My wish was for Priyanka to become an MP first. I am optimistic that she will secure a substantial victory and address the genuine concerns of the people. Priyanka is a person of great intellect,” Robert Vadra shared in an exclusive interview with PTI.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, a member of the Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty, is set to make her electoral debut in the Wayanad by-election. At 52, Priyanka will run for the parliamentary seat in the southern state of Kerala, which was recently won by her brother, Rahul Gandhi, in an effort to retain it for the Congress party.
