Uddhav Thackeray’s Hindutva Push: How the Ayodhya Controversy Gave Him a Political Opportunity

The Ram Temple donation controversy has given Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray fresh political space. He launched the Rama Raksha Andolan outside Dadar’s Hanuman temple on Sunday publicly. Uddhav invoked the Ram Janmabhoomi movement and remembered Bal Thackeray’s contribution to Hindutva politics. He accused people managing Ayodhya temple donations of damaging devotees’ trust through alleged irregularities. The campaign arrived after several Lok Sabha MPs joined Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction. Senior Mumbai leader Sachin Ahir also switched sides, creating further pressure on Uddhav’s organisation. Uddhav now wants workers and voters to focus on ideology instead of defections. During the event, supporters performed maha aarti and recited religious verses together publicly. Uddhav devoted his speech to Ayodhya, Ram Janmabhoomi, and Shiv Sena’s historical role. He argued that Hindus would not forgive anyone exploiting faith for financial gain.

Ayodhya row helps Uddhav shift focus from defections to ideology

Uddhav carefully separated Lord Ram from the people handling temple donations during his speech. He said devotees questioned administrators, not the deity or the Ram temple itself. He reminded supporters that Shiv Sainiks joined shila pujan, Rath Yatra, and kar seva. He claimed many Sena workers sacrificed their lives during the Ram Janmabhoomi movement years ago. Without naming BJP directly, Uddhav questioned changes after Narendra Modi became Prime Minister. He said people once believed Hindus would receive protection but now faced exploitation. Uddhav introduced a slogan asking supporters to keep Ram within their hearts. The slogan also encouraged them to say Jai Shri Ram with pride publicly. Sena leaders insist this campaign does not represent a sudden ideological shift today. They say Bal Thackeray treated Hindutva as core ideology rather than electoral messaging. The party wants voters to remember Shiv Sena’s role in building Hindutva politics.

Shiv Sena began in 1966 by championing Marathi identity and sons-of-the-soil politics. Bal Thackeray expanded its appeal during the late 1980s by strongly embracing Hindutva. His famous Hindu pride slogan became a defining message for Sena supporters statewide. The Ram Janmabhoomi movement helped Shiv Sena reach voters beyond Mumbai and nearby regions. It also strengthened the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance across Maharashtra during that political period. Their partnership formed Maharashtra’s first government in 1995 under Manohar Joshi’s leadership. Bal Thackeray gained national attention and supporters called him Hindu hridaysamrat with admiration. The Babri Masjid demolition remains an important chapter within Sena’s political memory today. Bal Thackeray publicly defended Shiv Sainiks if they participated in the demolition. Sena workers viewed that statement as proof of his uncompromising political commitment then.

BJP and Shinde Sena face Uddhav’s renewed Hindutva challenge

The 2022 Shiv Sena split has made Bal Thackeray’s legacy politically valuable again. Eknath Shinde’s faction holds the official party name and bow-and-arrow symbol today. It also enjoys support from a majority of Shiv Sena legislators currently. However, Sena (UBT) argues that Uddhav carries Bal Thackeray’s true political inheritance. Party leaders believe the battle shifted after they lost the name-and-symbol dispute. They now want to establish that Uddhav represents the party’s original ideology publicly. The Ayodhya campaign allows Sena (UBT) to challenge BJP on familiar Hindutva ground. It also helps Uddhav counter Shinde’s claim over Bal Thackeray’s political legacy. Leaders say the campaign deliberately focuses on devotees’ faith rather than temple criticism. They demand accountability from people facing allegations regarding donations and financial management. This strategy seeks to unite workers who felt discouraged after recent defections.

BJP leaders view Uddhav’s campaign as an attempt to regain Hindutva space politically. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis mocked Uddhav and welcomed his renewed remembrance of Ram. Fadnavis said Uddhav should follow Lord Ram’s path and recite religious prayers daily. Uddhav faces a different political environment from Bal Thackeray’s earlier Hindutva era. Sena (UBT) now belongs to the INDIA bloc alongside Congress and NCP (SP). This alliance creates challenges for Uddhav while he renews Hindutva-focused political messaging. He must reassure traditional Sena voters that he still protects Bal Thackeray’s legacy. At the same time, he must avoid creating discomfort among coalition partners. The Ram Temple donation controversy gives him a timely opening for this effort. Its success will depend on whether voters accept his ideological claim over rivals.
