New Delhi: Political discussions in Maharashtra have intensified after reports suggested that Sharad Pawar’s faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) could join the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). As speculation grows, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reportedly made its position clear. According to party leaders, any move towards the NDA will require both rival NCP factions to reunite first. The BJP prefers dealing with a single united party rather than one separate faction.

Political Meetings Fuel Fresh Speculation Over Maharashtra Realignment
Sources indicate that the BJP wants a complete merger between the Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar camps before considering any political alliance. The party reportedly has little interest in bringing only Sharad Pawar’s faction into the NDA. At the same time, leaders from the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, already part of the ruling alliance, have demanded a ministerial position for Rajya Sabha MP Parth Pawar during the next Union Cabinet expansion. This demand has added another political dimension to the ongoing discussions.
The merger speculation has also gained importance ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. The NDA government is expected to introduce the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, which proposes increasing the strength of the Lok Sabha and starting a fresh delimitation exercise. The Sharad Pawar-led NCP currently holds eight Lok Sabha seats and one Rajya Sabha seat. These numbers could become significant if the government requires additional support during key legislative debates.

Meanwhile, NCP (Sharad Pawar) leader Supriya Sule has responded cautiously to the proposed delimitation plan. She said the party would not oppose the proposal if all states receive an equal 50 percent increase in parliamentary seats. However, she clarified that the final decision would be taken only after discussions within the INDIA bloc. Her remarks indicate that the party has not yet taken an official stand on the issue.
Recent meetings between leaders from both NCP factions and senior BJP leaders have further strengthened speculation about a possible political realignment. Jayant Patil met Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to discuss administrative matters related to his constituency. Sharad Pawar and several MLAs also met Eknath Shinde last week, although Supriya Sule described the meeting as routine. Despite these explanations, the series of high-profile interactions continues to fuel debate over the future of Maharashtra politics.
