A few days ago, Yechury was admitted to the intensive care unit of AIIMS, Delhi, for treatment of an acute respiratory tract infection. Sitaram Yechury, General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), has passed away at the age of 72. Yechury was a key figure in Indian politics, known for his dedication to Marxist principles and leadership within the CPI(M). He played a crucial role in shaping party policies and actively advocated for social justice, economic equality, and progressive reforms.
Congress-CPM dilemma
During an impromptu press conference, Yechury’s political acumen was evident. At a time when there was speculation about a faction within the CPI(M), led by Yechury, advocating a national alliance with Congress to counter the BJP, a reporter questioned him about the potential impact on the CPM in Kerala. “Who told you I was insisting on anything?” Yechury retorted, his demeanor shifting. He advised the journalist to understand the party’s functioning before questioning it. Afterward, Yechury privately told the reporter that sensationalism wouldn’t advance the country and stressed the importance of responsible actions to counter communal elements for the nation’s greater good.
Three years later, Yechury demonstrated how. He managed to convince his party, even the powerful Kerala unit led by Pinarayi Vijayan, that it was important for the CPM to get into a loose alliance of secular-minded parties that included the Congress.
