Veteran Communist Leader Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Passes Away

Former West Bengal Chief Minister and veteran Communist leader Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee passed away at his residence in Kolkata on Thursday, August 8, 2024. Bhattacharjee, aged 80, is survived by his wife and daughter. CPI(M) State Secretary Mohd Salim confirmed the news, stating, “Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee passed away this morning. He suddenly fell ill today. Doctors came, but they couldn’t do much. The body will be preserved today. Final rites will be performed tomorrow, August 9. He had donated his body, so accordingly, it will be handed over to a medical college.”

Bhattacharjee, a significant figure in West Bengal’s political landscape, served as the Chief Minister from 2000 to 2011. His tenure was marked by both significant achievements and controversies. Under his leadership, West Bengal saw efforts towards industrialization, which, however, faced opposition and led to notable conflicts like the Nandigram and Singur movements. These events played a pivotal role in the political shift in the state, ultimately leading to the end of the 34-year Left Front rule.

End of an Era for CPI(M) and Day of Mourning Announced

Born on March 1, 1944, Bhattacharjee was an alumnus of Presidency College, Kolkata, where he studied Bengali literature. He joined politics at a young age, becoming involved with the CPI(M) during the tumultuous years of the 1960s. Over the decades, he rose through the ranks, known for his eloquence, literary acumen, and commitment to leftist ideology.

His passing marks the end of an era for the CPI(M) in West Bengal, where he was considered a stalwart and a guiding force. Many political leaders, cutting across party lines, have expressed their condolences, remembering Bhattacharjee as a leader who dedicated his life to the service of the people and the principles he believed in.

The state government has announced a day of mourning in his honor. His body will be preserved today and handed over to a medical college tomorrow, respecting his wishes for body donation. The final rites will be conducted tomorrow, allowing the people to pay their last respects to the veteran leader.
