India swiftly retaliated after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, shaking Pakistan’s military establishment.
The action also spread fear across Pakistan’s political leadership during the brief May escalation. President Asif Ali Zardari later acknowledged the pressure faced at the height of tensions. He spoke about the episode while addressing an official event on Saturday.
Zardari said his Military Secretary urgently warned him that war had begun. The secretary advised him to move into a bunker for immediate safety. Zardari claimed he had anticipated hostilities several days before the warning. He described the atmosphere as tense and dominated by fear at senior levels.

Pakistan President admits bunker warning amid India’s Operation Sindoor after Pahalgam terror attack
India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 to avenge the Pahalgam terror killings.
The April attack killed 26 civilians in Jammu and Kashmir. Indian forces carried out precision strikes on Pakistani military installations in May. They had earlier targeted nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
Zardari said he rejected bunker shelter, arguing leaders should confront danger openly. He claimed leaders earn martyrdom on battlefields rather than hiding underground. Following the strikes, Pakistan increased cross-border shelling along the frontier. Amid escalating tensions, Pakistan’s DGMO unexpectedly proposed a ceasefire.
