The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon), an organization dedicated to spreading Sanatan Dharma throughout the world, has barred one of its monks, Amogh Lila Das, from participating.
On Tuesday, the Iskcon released a press release indicating that Amogh Lila Prabhu admitted to making inappropriate remarks regarding Swami Vivekananda and his guru. As part of his penance, he would abstain from all social activities for one month, according to the press statement.
On the internet, there is virtually little published material on Amogh Lila Das. However, according to some of his YouTube video interviews, Amogh Lila Das claims he was born as Ashish Arora into a pious family in Lucknow.
According to him, he began his spiritual journey at a young age. The monk left his house in quest of God while he was in Class 12 in 2000. He returned, though, to seek a degree in software engineering. He began working for a US-based global firm after graduating in 2004.
According to him, he worked as a project manager until leaving the corporate sector in 2010. He became a father at the age of 29.
WHY DID ISKCON BAN AMOGH LILA DAS?
He questioned Swami Vivekananda’s use of fish in one of his pravachans, arguing that a good man would never consume anything that harms an animal.
“Will a good man ever eat fish?” Isn’t it true that fish can experience pain? Will a moral man therefore eat fish?” Amogh Lila Das said as she addressed a crowd. He was also critical of Swami Vivekananda’s mentor, Ramakrishna Paramhans.
Iskcon said in a statement that it was hurt by Amogh Lila Das’s “inappropriate and unacceptable comments and his lack of understanding about the great teachings of these two personalities,” and that he would be barred from the organization for a month.
