Thiruvananthapuram–Tambaram Amrit Bharat Express Launched to Strengthen Affordable Inter-State Rail Connectivity

Indian Railways has introduced a new Amrit Bharat Express service between Thiruvananthapuram and Tambaram, aiming to provide affordable, comfortable and reliable travel for passengers from lower and lower-middle income groups. The non-AC train will improve rail connectivity between Kerala and Tamil Nadu while linking several key cities across the two states.

The Thiruvananthapuram Central–Tambaram–Thiruvananthapuram Central Amrit Bharat Express will operate with train numbers 16122 and 16121. Designed as a budget-friendly long-distance service, the train focuses on high passenger capacity, improved safety features and better riding comfort compared to conventional express trains.

Designed for budget-friendly travel, the train will connect key cities across Kerala and Tamil Nadu

Route and Major Halts
The train will run through important railway junctions including Madurai, Dindigul, Tiruchchirappalli and Srirangam, strengthening north–south connectivity across southern India. En route, the Amrit Bharat Express will stop at 15 stations: Kulitturai, Nagercoil Town, Valliyur, Tirunelveli, Satur, Kovilpatti, Virudunagar, Madurai, Dindigul, Tiruchchirappalli, Srirangam, Ariyalur, Vriddhachalam, Villupuram and Chengalpattu.

Frequency of Service
The Thiruvananthapuram Central–Tambaram Amrit Bharat Express will run as a weekly service. From Thiruvananthapuram Central, the train will depart every Thursday, while from Tambaram, it will leave every Wednesday, ensuring regular connectivity for long-distance travellers.

Timetable Details
Train number 16122 will depart Thiruvananthapuram Central at 10:40 hrs on Thursday and reach Tambaram at 23:45 hrs on the same day. On the return journey, train number 16121 will leave Tambaram at 17:30 hrs on Wednesday and arrive at Thiruvananthapuram Central at 08:00 hrs on Thursday.

Railway officials said the new Amrit Bharat Express will play a key role in improving inter-state mobility between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The service is expected to benefit residents of southern Tamil Nadu and Kerala by supporting trade, healthcare access, education, employment and tourism, while offering a cost-effective travel option for daily and seasonal commuters.
