The Supreme Court delivered its judgment in the stray dog case and refused to change its earlier directions. A bench led by Justice Vikram Nath heard the matter. The Supreme Court ordered authorities to remove stray dogs from public places. These places include schools, hospitals, railway stations, bus stands, and sports complexes.
Further, the Court directed officials to shift stray dogs to shelters. The court said authorities must not release the dogs back to the same area after vaccination or sterilisation. In addition, the court rejected requests filed by animal rights groups and dog lovers.
The Supreme Court also asked states and Union Territories to improve public safety systems. Moreover, the court ordered officials to maintain enough anti-rabies vaccines in government hospitals. Authorities must also improve shelter facilities and veterinary services.

Supreme Court Directs Strict Monitoring
Meanwhile, the Court directed High Courts to monitor the implementation of its orders. The court also allowed High Courts to start suo motu cases for monitoring compliance. Besides this, the Court said courts can take action against officers who fail to follow the directions.
At the same time, the Court stated that officers acting honestly will receive legal protection. The court also said officials should not face FIRs or criminal cases for actions taken in good faith.
Additionally, the Supreme Court directed the National Highways Authority of India and state governments to manage stray animals on highways and expressways. Authorities must arrange safe transport and shelter facilities for stray animals.
Finally, the Supreme Court allowed authorities to take legal action against dangerous or rabid dogs under existing laws. Officials said the directions aim to improve public safety and reduce dog bite cases across the country.
