Rajya Sabha Honors Former MPs Mukul Roy, Janardhan Waghmare and H K Dua

Members of the Rajya Sabha on Monday paid tribute to former MPs Mukul Roy, Janardhan Waghmare, and H. K. Dua, who passed away recently. When the House reconvened for the second phase of the Budget Session, Chairman C. P. Radhakrishnan read obituary references and expressed deep sorrow over their deaths.

Radhakrishnan urged members to stand and observe a moment of silence as a mark of respect for the departed leaders. The House collectively paid homage, remembering their contributions to Parliament and public life. The chairman said the country had lost distinguished personalities who served the nation in different capacities.

The chairman informed the House that Mukul Roy passed away on February 23, 2026, at the age of 71. Roy represented West Bengal in the Rajya Sabha for two consecutive terms from 2006 to 2012 and from 2012 to 2017, actively participating in parliamentary discussions and political activities.

Key Roles in Government and Parliament

During his political career, Roy served as the Minister of Railways in 2012 and earlier worked as Minister of State in the ministries of shipping and railways between 2009 and 2012. He also chaired the Parliamentary Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture during his second term in the Upper House.

The House also paid homage to Janardhan Waghmare, who died on March 2, 2026, at the age of 91. Waghmare served as a Rajya Sabha member representing Maharashtra from April 2008 to April 2014. Known as a respected educationist and social reformer, he wrote several books in Marathi, Hindi and English on education, literature and philosophy and received honours including the Maharashtra Bhushan Award.

Members also remembered H. K. Dua, who passed away on March 4, 2026, at the age of 88. A noted journalist and political commentator, he served as a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha from 2009 to 2015. Educated at Panjab University, he later worked as press adviser to former prime ministers H. D. Deve Gowda and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and also served as India’s ambassador to Denmark from 2001 to 2003. He was honoured with the Padma Bhushan for his contributions to journalism and public life.
