Rahul Gandhi Says Women’s Quota Bill Aims to Reshape Electoral Landscape in Lok Sabha

Rahul Gandhi launched a sharp attack on the government in the Lok Sabha, accusing it of attempting to alter India’s electoral map through the proposed linkage between the Women’s Reservation framework and delimitation. He claimed the government had already experimented with such changes in Assam and Jammu and Kashmir and was now planning to expand the approach nationwide. Gandhi warned that this move could significantly reshape political representation across the country.

Rahul Gandhi accuses government of using women’s quota

He argued that the Women’s Reservation Bill passed in 2023 was the actual legislation, but the current effort to tie its implementation to delimitation aimed to redraw political boundaries. Gandhi alleged that the ruling party intended to secure political advantage by restructuring constituencies. He emphasized that such changes would require constitutional amendments and could have long-term implications for India’s democratic structure.

Gandhi further stated that the proposed changes would disproportionately impact southern states, northeastern states, and smaller states by reducing their representation. He accused the government of prioritizing political power over fair representation, calling the move an “anti-national act.” He said the policy would effectively weaken the voice of several regions to maintain political dominance at the center.

He also linked the issue to the caste census, alleging that the government was trying to bypass it and limit representation for backward communities. Gandhi claimed that the move would deny adequate political power to OBCs, Dalits, and marginalized groups. He criticized the government for avoiding meaningful use of caste data in representation and accused it of attempting to reshape the political system to its advantage.
