PM Narendra Modi Suggests Renaming Parliament Building as ‘Samvidhan Sadan’

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla announced on Tuesday that the old Parliament building will henceforth be known as ‘Samvidhan Sadan’ as the Parliament’s activities commenced in the new facility today.

Birla clarified that henceforth the official terms such as ‘House’. ‘Lobby’ and ‘Galleries’ during the Lok Sabha proceeding will indicate the new building which is now the Parliament House of India. He reportedly said, “The building where we gathered in the morning will now be known as Samvidhan Sadan.”

Old Parliament Building Renamed

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially renamed the old Parliament building ‘Samvidhan Sadan’. It was renamed during an event held in the Central Hall of the historic structure.

PM Modi said, “My suggestion is that as we are going to the new building, the glory of this building should never decline. It should not be called just the old Parliament… It can be named Samvidhan Sadan.”

Members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on Tuesday gathered at the historic Central Hall.

Renovation Plans for Samvidhan Sadan

According to an NDTV report, a government official has said that the Centre will be modifying the Samvidhan Sadan for ‘functional spaces for Parliamentary events’.The official has also said that “The historic structure will be conserved, as it is an archaeological asset of the country.”

The national archives will be shifted to the new building as well.

Built between 1921 and 1927, the Samvidhan Sadan witnessed significant milestones in Indian history. It includes the proclamation of India’s independence and the drafting of the Indian Constitution.
