Penguin Issues Note Amid Dispute Over General Naravane’s Book

Penguin Random House India issued a clarification as controversy grew over the alleged circulation of unauthorised copies of Four Stars of Destiny, the memoir of former Army chief General MM Naravane. The publisher confirmed that it holds exclusive publishing rights and stated clearly that it has not released the book in any print or digital format. As the issue gained attention, reports of leaked excerpts sparked a political debate that quickly reached Parliament, prompting Delhi Police to register an FIR and launch an investigation into the suspected illegal distribution of unpublished material.

Penguin Clarifies Stand on Unpublished Memoir

Meanwhile, Penguin warned that any version of the memoir currently in circulation, whether complete or partial and across any platform, amounts to copyright infringement, and the company said it would take legal action against those responsible. At the political level, the issue escalated after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi referred to the unreleased book inside Parliament and claimed it contained details about the 2020 India-China standoff in Ladakh. However, parliamentary authorities stopped him from quoting the memoir, citing its unpublished status, which further intensified tensions in the Lok Sabha.

Suspensions and Ongoing Investigation

As a result, repeated protests disrupted proceedings, leading authorities to suspend eight MPs for the remainder of the Budget session. Gandhi later wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, calling the restrictions a serious blow to democratic principles and arguing that Parliament should freely discuss matters of national security. At the same time, Delhi Police transferred the case to the Special Cell, confirming that investigators are actively examining how the manuscript may have leaked before its official release.
