With India set to host New Zealand in an important ODI series next month, the back-up wicketkeeper debate has returned ahead of squad selection. KL Rahul remains the clear first-choice keeper. However, the selectors must now decide who fits best as his deputy. Ishan Kishan’s strong recent form has strengthened his case. Still, the decision raises concerns about Rishabh Pant’s lack of opportunities in the 50-over format.
The back-up wicketkeeper role has long confused India’s ODI plans. After Pant suffered a serious car accident in December 2022, Kishan stepped in and made an immediate impact. He smashed a historic double century in Bangladesh and followed it up with consistent scores. His run included four straight half-centuries and a crucial 82 against Pakistan in the Asia Cup. Despite this, he played only two matches in the ODI World Cup before losing his spot.

Kishan’s domestic form boosts selection hopes
In recent months, Kishan has forced his way back into contention through domestic cricket. He scored a century in Jharkhand’s Vijay Hazare Trophy opener and led the team to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title. He also finished the tournament as the highest run-scorer. These performances highlight his confidence, fitness and match readiness.
Selectors had considered him for the South Africa ODI series as well. However, the panel failed to reach a consensus at the time, despite his strong List A numbers.
Pant awaits a fair run in ODIs
Pant returned to action in IPL 2024 after a long recovery. Since then, he has remained part of the ODI squad but has rarely featured in the playing XI. Team balance and Rahul’s presence have limited his chances. Even when selected, Pant often stayed on the bench.
Although Kishan clearly leads in recent form, dropping Pant without giving him a sustained run may be premature. A home series offers a low-risk chance to test options. If India want clarity and depth ahead of major tournaments, the selectors should give Pant a proper opportunity before closing the door.
