Pakistani forces targeted Golden Temple after India’s strikes against terrorists: Indian Army

Major General Kartik C Seshadri, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 15th Infantry Division, disclosed on Monday that Pakistan attempted to launch a drone and missile attack on the Golden Temple in Amritsar during the night of May 7–8. This act was reportedly in retaliation for India’s strikes on nine terrorist targets located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Pakistan Planned Strikes on Civilian, Religious Sites; Golden Temple Targeted

The senior Indian Army officer said the Indian forces anticipated that Pakistan, lacking legitimate military targets, would strike civilian and religious sites in India. “We knew the Pakistan Army had no legitimate targets, so we expected them to target Indian military installations and civilian locations, including religious places,” he told ANI. “Among these, the Golden Temple stood out as the most prominent,” he added.

India Counters Massive Pre-Dawn Air Assault on Golden Temple

“We mobilised additional modern air defence assets to provide comprehensive air defence cover for the Golden Temple,” said Major General Seshadri. In the early hours of May 8, Pakistan launched a large-scale air assault under the cover of darkness, using drones and long-range missiles. “On the morning of May 8, in the dark hours, Pakistan carried out a massive air assault with unmanned aerial weapons, mainly drones and long-range missiles,” he said. The Indian Army, fully prepared, intercepted and destroyed all incoming threats.

Army Thwarts Attack on Golden Temple

“We anticipated the attack and were fully prepared. Our brave and alert Army Air Defence gunners foiled the Pakistan Army’s nefarious plans by shooting down all drones and missiles aimed at the Golden Temple, ensuring not even a scratch touched our holy shrine,” the officer said. The Indian Army later demonstrated how its air defence systems, including the AKASH missile system and L-70 Air Defence Guns, successfully intercepted and neutralised the incoming Pakistani drones and missiles, safeguarding the Golden Temple and major cities across Punjab.
