Congress leader P Chidambaram strongly criticized External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar for his recent remarks on the Katchatheevu island issue, accusing him of aligning with the BJP and RSS. Jaishankar, known for his vocal stance in PM Modi’s Cabinet, claimed that former PM Jawaharlal Nehru regarded Katchatheevu island as insignificant, citing a statement from May 1961. According to Jaishankar, Nehru expressed willingness to relinquish India’s claim to the island, considering it a mere nuisance.

Congress’s Counterattack to Jaishankar’s Statements on Katchatheevu Island
In a tweet, Chidambaram questioned Foreign Minister Jaishankar’s recent statements on Katchatheevu island, referencing a past RTI reply from 2015 when Jaishankar served as FM. Chidambaram accused Jaishankar of flip-flopping on the issue, suggesting a shift from his previous positions. He highlighted the historical context of India’s acknowledgment of Sri Lanka’s ownership of the island during the Indira Gandhi government in 1974. Chidambaram also raised concerns about the detention of fishermen by Sri Lanka over the years, pointing out that such incidents occurred under various political administrations, including those led by the BJP.
