Ram Nath Kovind: One Nation, One Election is for National Interest

The ex-President Ram Nath Kovind stated on Monday that conducting simultaneous elections benefits the public by allowing the allocation of saved funds towards developmental projects.

Ex-President Ram Nath Kovind, leading the committee on “one nation, one election,” emphasized that simultaneous polls serve the national interest, devoid of any party affiliation. The former President emphasized that conducting simultaneous elections would benefit the public by utilizing the saved revenue for development work.

“I urge all political parties to collaborate, emphasizing that this is in the national interest. No political party is involved in it,” he emphasized. The government formed an eight-member committee, led by Mr. Kovind, earlier this year.

The Former President Ram Nath Kovind said

The former president stated, “Numerous committees, including the parliamentary committee, Niti Aayog, Election Commission of India, and others, have recommended reviving the tradition of ‘one nation one election’ in the country.”

“The government has constituted a committee for the purpose and made me its chairman. “We collaborate with the people, providing suggestions to the government on reinstating this tradition for implementation,” he emphasized.

“I have also contacted all registered national parties and sought their suggestions. At some point in time, all of them supported it. We request all the political parties to cooperate as this is in the national interest,” he said.

Asserting that no particular political party will be benefitting from “one nation, one election”, Mr Kovind said, “If implemented, the party which is in power at the Centre will benefit, be it the BJP or the Congress or any other party. There is no discrimination.”

The committee in its September meeting outlined procedures. It decided to invite nationally recognized, state, and parliamentary parties for input. The aim was to gather their suggestions and viewpoints on the matter of concurrent elections in the country.

In addition, it said the Committee will also invite the Law-Commission of India to make their suggestions/viewpoints on the issue.
