New Portal Launched for Citizenship Applications Under CAA by Centre

The day following the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announcement of the rules for enacting the (CAA) Citizenship (Amendment) Act, the government introduced a new online portal on Tuesday. This platform is designed to facilitate the application process for individuals seeking citizenship under the CAA.

According to the regulations outlined in the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), individuals belonging to the Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, or Christian communities from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan are eligible to apply for Indian citizenship. Importantly, they can pursue citizenship even without presenting a valid passport from these countries or holding a valid visa from India, provided they entered India before December 31, 2014.

CAA’s Flexible Nationality Proof Criteria

The guidelines, which set the stage for the CAA’s implementation, provide that “any document” proving an applicant’s nationality is sufficient if it demonstrates that one of their parents, grandparents, or even great-grandparents was born in one of these nations. Furthermore, they claim that a certificate from an elected local body member would suffice in place of a visa.
