Since a civil war broke out in the adjacent country of Myanmar, 5,801 illegal immigrants have found in Kamjong district, according to Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s statement on Sunday. According to him, 359 of them willingly went back to Myanmar, while 15 of them passed away from natural causes.

According to the chief minister, the remaining undocumented immigrants from Myanmar are currently seeking refuge in eight different villages within Kamjong district’s designated camps. According to the chief minister, these camps are situated distant from the local population to prevent the immigrants from mingling with the locals.

“We will continue the deportation of illegal immigrants to protect the state, which has already been affect by various challenges and threats posed by illegal immigration, forest encroachment, and poppy plantations,” Singh continued.

Biometric Data Collection Begins for Illegal Immigrants, Deportation Planned
Along with the police, the Kamjong district government has stepped up security around the designated camps and started collecting biometric data. Plans are also in place for the verification of every immigrant’s information and their deportation as soon as things settle down in Myanmar.

The chief minister restated the government’s pledge to protect the native population of Manipur’s interests. In addition, he emphasised the necessity of upholding law and order, asked for public cooperation, and issued a warning against the spread of misleading information.

Illegal Immigrant Camps Managed by Village Committees, Rations Provided by District Admin
Official sources state that the district administration provides rations to the authorised camps, which are mostly manage by village local committees. The administration issues identity cards to the immigrants, and every other day, a headcount is conduct.

The sources claim that although the immigrants are eager to return to Myanmar since the country’s growing season has begun, they are now reluctant due to recent bombings carried out by the army of Myanmar.
