India Germany Strategic Partnership received a major boost as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in India on his first official visit since assuming office in May 2025. This two-day visit marks his maiden trip to India as chancellor and his first major diplomatic tour of Asia. Merz landed in Ahmedabad, the largest city in Gujarat and the political home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where he received a warm welcome.
India–Germany Strategic Partnership Enters a New Phase
During the visit, Chancellor Merz is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Modi. The two leaders are expected to review the progress made in the India-Germany Strategic Partnership, which completed 25 years last year. Their discussions will focus on expanding cooperation in key areas such as trade, investment, technology, education, innovation, and defense. After their meeting, both leaders will address the media at a joint press conference.
Trade and Investment Talks Ahead of EU–India Summit
A significant highlight of the visit was Merz’s tour of the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad along with Prime Minister Modi. The ashram was once the residence of Mahatma Gandhi and played a vital role during India’s freedom struggle. Merz paid tribute to Gandhi’s legacy, viewed historical exhibits, and signed the guestbook. He also saw the spinning wheel used by Gandhi, which symbolizes self-reliance and non-violence—values that continue to inspire India today.

The timing of Merz’s visit is politically and economically important, as it comes just weeks before the upcoming EU-India summit. At the summit, a long-awaited free trade agreement between India and the European Union is widely expected to be signed. This agreement could significantly boost trade relations and economic cooperation between the two sides.
Defence Cooperation and €8 Billion Submarine Deal
Another key focus of the visit is defense cooperation. Negotiations are progressing on a proposed €8 billion submarine deal between India and Germany. The agreement would involve joint submarine construction in India, supporting India’s defense modernization and “Make in India” initiative while allowing Germany to strengthen its presence in India’s defense market.
Merz is accompanied by a large delegation of senior business leaders, underlining the strong economic ties between the two countries. On the second day of his visit, the German chancellor will travel to Bengaluru, India’s leading technology and innovation hub. Bengaluru hosts many German companies and plays a crucial role in India’s IT and startup ecosystem.
