Comedian Kunal Kamra is in hot water once again for his jokes about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, as the state’s legislative council has accepted a breach of privilege notice against him.
Council chairperson Ram Shinde told PTI that he has accepted the notice against Kunal Kamra over his “traitor” remark on Eknath Shinde and referred it to the Privileges Committee.
Breach of privilege refers to instances when any person disregards or undermines the rights and immunities enjoyed by the parliament or legislature and its members, which are essential for them to perform their duties.
State tourism minister and Shiv Sena leader Shambhuraj Desai, while talking to reporters, demanded Kamra’s immediate arrest and warned not to test party workers’ patience.
“Shinde has asked us to observe restraint, which is why we are quiet.” As Shiv Sena workers, we know how to drag him out from wherever he is hiding, but as ministers, we have some restrictions,” Desai said.

Ashwini Vaishnaw backs police summons to Kunal Kamra
Meanwhile, Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw defended the police summons to Kunal Kamra over his remarks, stating that authorities should take legal action if required.
“When the law of the land demands it, we should follow it,” Vaishnaw stated in New Delhi when reporters questioned him about the severity of the summons.
He emphasized that while the Constitution guarantees freedom of speech, it also includes certain safeguards. “We must function within the constitutional framework as a society. The right to freedom of speech and expression is clearly defined, and everyone respects it. However, the Constitution also includes safeguards that are just as crucial as the rights themselves,” he said.
Vaishnaw further noted the importance of considering cultural differences. “What may be acceptable in Western society might not be appropriate in ours. Every situation carries its own cultural context,” he added.
