Indian Railways is set to usher in a new era of long-distance and overnight rail travel with the launch of the country’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Express on the Kamakhya (Guwahati)–Howrah route. The semi-high-speed sleeper train will begin its commercial operations from Thursday, January 22, offering passengers a faster, more comfortable and technologically advanced travel experience.
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) zone will operate and maintain the new-age train, which is expected to significantly enhance rail connectivity between the northeastern region and eastern India
According to Indian Railways, train number 27576 Kamakhya–Howrah Vande Bharat Sleeper Express will commence its commercial journey from January 22, while train number 27575 Howrah–Kamakhya Vande Bharat Sleeper Express will start operations from January 23.

India’s First Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Begins Commercial Run on Kamakhya–Howrah Route from January 22
The Kamakhya–Howrah Vande Bharat Sleeper Express will run on all days of the week except Wednesday, while the Howrah–Kamakhya service will operate daily except Thursday. Railways has planned this weekly schedule to facilitate efficient rake maintenance and smooth operations.
Key Halt Stations on the Route
During its journey between Howrah and Kamakhya, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express will halt at 13 important stations, improving connectivity for several major towns and cities along the route. These stations include Bandel, Nabadwip Dham, Katwa, Azimganj, New Farakka, Malda Town, Aluabari Road, New Jalpaiguri, Jalpaiguri Road, New Cooch Behar, New Alipurduar, New Bongaigaon and Rangiya.
Modern Coach Composition and Capacity
The Howrah–Kamakhya–Howrah Vande Bharat Sleeper Express will comprise 16 modern coaches, designed to offer a premium overnight travel experience. The rake will include 11 AC 3-tier coaches, four AC 2-tier coaches and one AC First Class coach. Indian Railways will deploy two rakes on this route to ensure operational efficiency and service reliability.
Timings and Journey Duration
As per the official timetable, train number 27575 Howrah–Kamakhya Vande Bharat Sleeper Express will depart from Howrah at 18:20 hrs and reach Kamakhya at 08:20 hrs the following day. In the return direction, train number 27576 Kamakhya–Howrah Vande Bharat Sleeper Express will leave Kamakhya at 18:15 hrs and arrive in Howrah at 08:15 hrs the next morning.
The total journey time for the entire route will be approximately 14 hours, making it one of the fastest overnight rail services connecting the Northeast with eastern India.

Railway officials said the introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper train marks a significant milestone in India’s rail modernization drive. Equipped with advanced safety features, improved ride quality and enhanced passenger amenities, the new service aims to redefine long-distance overnight journeys while boosting tourism, business travel and regional connectivity.
