Bengaluru IT Admin Steals 50 Laptops, Caught on CCTV

A system administrator from a multimedia firm in Bengaluru has been arrested for stealing 50 company laptops after suffering significant financial losses, police confirmed on Tuesday. The accused, identified as Murugesh M, faced severe setbacks from failed ventures in tomato cultivation and running a cyber center, both of which left him with losses amounting to approximately ₹25 lakh during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Murugesh, who was responsible for managing the company’s laptop inventory. Reportedly took advantage of his position to steal the devices discreetly. According to the police and a report by the Deccan Herald, Murugesh stole the laptops over a span of two months. Slipping them out of storage without arousing suspicion. His involvement in the theft came to light when he stopped reporting to work on August 22. This prompted the company to investigate the sudden disappearance of the laptops. Which were kept in a storage room under CCTV surveillance.

System Administrator Arrested for Stealing 50 Laptops

The company’s management initiated an internal inquiry and reviewed the CCTV footage from the storage room. The recordings revealed that Murugesh had been removing the laptops one by one, briefly using them before placing them in his bag and leaving the premises. The company immediately alerted the authorities, and Murugesh was arrested shortly afterward.

This incident highlights how financial pressures from unsuccessful business ventures led Murugesh to commit the crime. Investigators are still probing how he intended to sell or dispose of the stolen devices. The police are working to recover the stolen laptops and determine whether any accomplices were involved. This arrest underscores the need for businesses to remain vigilant and ensure that even trusted employees are monitored.
