The Russian Mi-17s, which will start to be phased out by 2028, would likely be replaced by an Indian-made medium-lift helicopter in the next 8 to 10 years, according to a Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) official.
The conceptual design of the upcoming 13-ton Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH), according to Abdul Rashid Tajar, Chief Manager (Design) Aerodynamics at HAL, has already been frozen, and the comprehensive design for the helicopter will be started soon.
As per the officials, they are just waiting for funding and security approval and they would be able to fly the first prototype within 4 years of the CSS approvals. The testing certification is likely to be ready within the next four years.
It fits perfectly on the schedule if the approvals come, as the Mi-17s are going to begin phasing out after eight years.
Now, the IAF possesses over 250 Mi-17 helicopters, each of which has a capacity of approximately 30 soldiers and various cargo.
The IMRH will also be able to support air assault, air transport, combat logistics, combat search and rescue, and casualty evacuation missions. It will be capable of carrying up to 4,500 kg at sea level.
Along with HAL, France Safran Helicopter Engines will construct the helicopter’s engine. During the Aero India, all sides agreed to a work-sharing agreement for the formation of a joint venture for the design, development, production, and lifetime support of helicopter engines.
HAL is considering putting a minimum order of more than 500 helicopters because each one will likely cost more than Rs 300 crore. HAL will also look into potential export markets.
