Diplomatic outreach helps keep Strait of Hormuz open for Indian energy imports amid regional tensions

The Strait of Hormuz serves as one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints for global oil and gas shipments. Concerned about potential disruptions to shipping routes, the Indian government moved swiftly through diplomatic channels to keep the sea lane open for its vessels carrying crude oil and liquefied petroleum gas.

Officials said Iran has permitted Indian oil tankers to continue passing through the waterway, even as vessels linked to the United States, Europe and Israel face restrictions in the region. India’s heavy dependence on imported energy makes stability in Gulf shipping lanes vital for the country’s economic and energy security.

As part of broader diplomatic efforts, Jaishankar also consulted key international counterparts, including Sergey Lavrov and Jean‑Noël Barrot, to discuss regional stability. The tensions intensified earlier after reports that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in a joint US-Israel strike, prompting warnings from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps about shipping through the strategic waterway.
