Income Tax Department officials are currently conducting raids at the properties of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MP S. Jagathrakshakan in Tamil Nadu.
The news agency ANI has reported that over 40 locations are being searched. Another news agency, PTI, has it that around 20 locations are being searched at present.
The raids come amidst an escalation of raids led by law enforcement and central agencies, under the control of the Narendra Modi-led Union government, against opposition party leaders and dissenters.
The DMK is in opposition to the Bharatiya Janata Party.

In June, party leader and Tamil Nadu minister V. Senthil Balaji Balaji was arrested by the central agency, Enforcement Directorate, in an alleged money laundering case. Following this, in an unprecedented move, the governor of the state, T.N. Ravi, sought to dismiss him from the council of ministers.
A day ago, Aam Aadmi Party’s Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh was arrested following raids at his house by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the liquor policy case, under which two Delhi ministers, Satyendar Jain and Manish Sisodia are already in police custody.
AAP has accused the BJP-led Union government of acting out a “pre-planned script”.
