Global Firepower Index 2025: Indian Army Secures Top 5 Spot, Pakistan Drops Out of Top 10

The Global Firepower Index 2025 has been released, ranking India as the fourth most powerful military. This highlights the strengthening capabilities of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Pakistan dropped out of the top 10 in 2024, slipping from ninth to twelfth position.

The Global Firepower Index evaluates military strength using over 60 factors, including defense technology, financial resources, logistics, geography, and strategic positioning. The United States remains at the top of the rankings.

India Maintains Fourth Place in Global Firepower Index

The Russian army holds the second-place ranking after the US, followed by the Chinese army in third. India has maintained its fourth-place ranking for the sixth consecutive year. India’s focus on defence production and self-reliance has further solidified its position. Its leading position in the index is attributable to modernisation efforts across all military branches.

France has ascended to become the seventh most powerful country, climbing from eleventh place last year. Japan, previously in seventh position, now occupies the eighth spot.

If we talk about the maximum number of soldiers, India ranks second globally, with 1,455,550 active personnel. Additionally, India possesses a reserve force of 1,155,000 soldiers.

India possesses advanced weaponry, including T-90 Bhishma and Arjun tanks, BrahMos missiles, and the Pinaka rocket system. The Indian Air Force has grown significantly, now operating 2,229 aircraft, including 600 fighter jets, 899 helicopters, and 831 support aircraft. Meanwhile, the Indian Navy has strengthened its force with 142,251 personnel and a fleet of 150 warships and submarines.

The Firepower Index shows that Pakistan outperforms India in only two of eight categories: land power and geography. Pakistan’s army comprises 654,000 soldiers but falls far behind India in defense budget. In terms of air power, Pakistan has 1,399 aircraft, including 328 fighter jets. However, India holds a significant naval advantage with an aircraft carrier, which Pakistan lacks, and a fleet of 18 submarines compared to Pakistan’s eight.
