Government Rejects Elon Musk’s Oligarch Claim Over India’s Internet Framework

The Indian government has rejected Elon Musk’s claims about Starlink’s approval. The Ministry of Communications called the allegations baseless and misconceived. Musk had questioned India’s regulatory framework for satellite services. The ministry defended the framework in a statement issued through PIB. It said the rules remain fair and non-discriminatory. The ministry did not mention Musk directly in its statement. However, officials issued the clarification after his social media post. Musk had alleged that certain oligarchs were blocking Starlink. He claimed they wanted to protect their monopolistic position. The government rejected any suggestion of unfair treatment. It also explained the current approval process for satellite companies.

Government Defends India’s Satellite Internet Framework

The ministry said India follows a uniform authorisation framework. The framework covers all major telecommunication services. It also applies to satellite communication service providers. The government has already granted licenses to three companies. These companies provide satellite communication through non-geostationary satellite systems. The ministry said every licensee must meet security requirements. Authorities currently assess security compliance for all three companies. The government said all three entities remain at similar stages. It stressed that no company receives special treatment. Companies must complete security checks before moving forward. They can seek spectrum assignment after completing those requirements. The ministry said the process applies equally to every licensee. This clarification directly counters claims of regulatory discrimination.

Elon Musk made his allegations on Wednesday night. He shared the comments on social media platform X. Musk accused unnamed oligarchs of blocking Starlink’s Indian launch. He claimed they wanted to maintain a monopoly over Indian users. Musk did not identify the people behind the alleged opposition. His remarks quickly attracted attention across social media. The government responded by defending its regulatory process. Officials said the framework does not unfairly target Starlink. They also highlighted the status of other satellite service providers. Reliance Jio and Airtel-backed OneWeb also hold licenses. All three companies currently face security assessments. Authorities will complete those checks before further approvals. The government said Starlink follows the same regulatory process.

Elon Musk’s Starlink Approval Still Awaits Security Clearance

Starlink has continued preparations for its Indian operations. The company discussed its plans during India Mobile Congress. Starlink Vice President Lauren Dreyer spoke about security preparations. She said the company built India-specific security controls. Dreyer said Starlink considered Indian security requirements during development. She also highlighted controls across different operational layers. The company plans to keep Indian user data within India. These measures could help Starlink meet regulatory requirements. However, the company still awaits security clearance. The government must complete its assessment before spectrum assignment. Starlink cannot begin full commercial operations before completing this process. The ministry said authorities will follow established regulatory requirements. Officials will assess the company without any special consideration.

The government’s response comes amid growing interest in satellite internet. Starlink has sought to expand its services across India. The company needs regulatory approval before launching commercial services. The current process requires licensing and security compliance. Authorities must also complete spectrum-related procedures afterward. The government has maintained that all providers face similar requirements. This position directly challenges Musk’s allegations of discrimination. Starlink’s future launch will depend on the pending assessment. The company says it has already prepared for Indian regulations. It also says it can protect Indian user data locally. Government officials will determine whether those measures meet requirements. Until then, Starlink remains in the approval process. The ministry has rejected claims of an unfair regulatory framework.
