Rajdhani Express Delayed Near Mumbai Due to Heavy Rain, Passengers Face Long Wait

Mumbai: Hundreds of passengers travelling on the Delhi-Mumbai Tejas Rajdhani Express found themselves stranded for several hours after relentless monsoon rain disrupted railway operations in Gujarat and Maharashtra. The premium train, which departed from Delhi on July 22 and was scheduled to arrive at Borivali in Mumbai at around 7:30 a.m. on July 23, remained stuck at Valsad railway station until late Thursday evening. Continuous heavy rainfall triggered flooding and waterlogging on railway tracks in several areas, including Palghar and Dahanu, forcing railway authorities to slow or suspend train movements. The prolonged delay affected hundreds of passengers, many of whom had important work commitments, medical appointments and family engagements in Mumbai. Railway officials continued monitoring weather conditions and track safety before allowing trains to resume operations.

The Delhi-Mumbai Tejas Rajdhani encountered its first major delay when it remained stationary outside Vadodara for nearly five hours because of adverse weather conditions. After finally resuming its journey, passengers hoped the train would gradually recover the lost time. However, the situation worsened when the train reached Valsad, where it remained halted for more than eight hours due to flooding and operational restrictions on the route ahead. Continuous rainfall across Gujarat and Maharashtra reduced visibility and affected railway infrastructure, making it unsafe for trains to proceed at normal speeds. Officials reportedly prioritized passenger safety over schedule, resulting in significant delays not only for the Rajdhani Express but also for several other trains operating on the busy Western Railway corridor. The disruption highlighted the impact of intense monsoon weather on one of India’s busiest rail networks.

Train Faced Multiple Halts as Heavy Rain Intensified Across the Region

As the hours passed, frustration grew among passengers who said they received very little official information regarding the delay. Many travellers stated that they relied primarily on internet updates, railway apps and social media instead of announcements from railway staff. Several passengers felt that timely communication would have eased uncertainty and helped them plan accordingly. Some travellers pointed out that while extreme weather cannot be controlled, authorities can improve passenger experience by issuing regular updates about expected delays, operational challenges and possible departure times. The absence of frequent announcements led to confusion inside the train, with many passengers repeatedly checking online platforms for fresh information. Several commuters also contacted their families and employers to inform them about the unexpected delay.

Despite the operational disruption, onboard services remained functional throughout the extended halt. Railway catering staff served passengers a complimentary lunch consisting of dal and rice, followed later by tea and snacks in the evening. Additional drinking water bottles were distributed as the delay continued. Air-conditioning systems, charging ports and lighting inside the coaches remained operational, allowing passengers to charge mobile phones and stay connected despite intermittent mobile network issues. Washroom water supply also continued without interruption. Passengers appreciated the efforts made by the onboard staff to maintain basic facilities during the delay, although many expressed concern over how long these services could continue if the train remained stationary for an extended period. Families travelling with children and elderly passengers especially welcomed the continued availability of food and drinking water.

Railways Continue Passenger Services Despite Long Delay

The disruption comes as Gujarat and Maharashtra continue to experience widespread heavy rainfall due to an active monsoon system. Several districts have reported waterlogging, overflowing rivers and flooding in low-lying areas, affecting both road and rail transport. Railway authorities have been conducting continuous inspections of tracks, bridges and signalling equipment before allowing train movement to ensure passenger safety. Water accumulation near railway lines and reduced visibility have forced trains to operate at restricted speeds in many sections. Meteorological agencies have also warned that heavy rainfall may persist in parts of western India over the coming days, prompting authorities to remain on high alert. Railway officials have advised passengers to check train schedules and live running status before starting their journey, as weather-related disruptions may continue.

As Thursday evening progressed, passengers remained hopeful that the Tejas Rajdhani would soon receive clearance to resume its journey toward Mumbai. Many travellers described the delay as one of the longest they had experienced on a Rajdhani Express, a service known for its punctuality and premium standards. While passengers acknowledged that safety must remain the top priority during severe weather, they also urged railway authorities to strengthen communication systems during emergencies. Regular announcements, transparent updates and accurate estimates of delays, they said, would help reduce confusion and anxiety during such situations. With weather conditions remaining unpredictable, railway officials continued monitoring the affected sections before permitting normal train operations. Until services fully resumed, hundreds of passengers waited patiently onboard, hoping to reach Mumbai safely after an unexpectedly long journey.
