This morning, farmers from Punjab commenced their ‘Delhi Chalo’ march, aiming to press for their demands, notably including a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops. This decision followed an inconclusive meeting with two Union ministers. As the farmers began their march, significant traffic jams ensued across the national capital region, disrupting daily activities for many commuters. In response to the escalating traffic chaos, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, alongside Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, addressed the situation during the day’s proceedings. They assured lawyers stuck in traffic that arrangements would be made to accommodate them, demonstrating sensitivity to the challenges faced by citizens amidst the protests.
Over 200 farmer unions, represented by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, are participating in the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march to advocate for their demands. This collective effort underscores the farmers’ determination to secure MSP guarantees and other concessions from the government.
The mobilization of farmers towards Delhi has prompted a significant response from law enforcement agencies. There has been extensive deployment of police and paramilitary forces, as well as the installation of multiple barricades at Delhi’s borders to prevent the entry of protesting farmers. Despite the logistical challenges posed by the protests, the participating farmer unions remain steadfast in their commitment to peacefully assert their demands.
Amidst the ongoing demonstrations and disruptions, the judiciary, represented by the Chief Justice and his colleagues, has exhibited a willingness to accommodate those affected by the traffic situation. This gesture reflects a broader acknowledgment of the difficulties faced by citizens and legal professionals as a result of the ongoing protests, highlighting the need for responsive and adaptive measures to ensure the smooth functioning of daily life.
