PM Hails “New Chapter In India’s Space Odyssey”: The Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft launched from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, carrying the hopes of an entire nation. If the mission is successful, India will become the fourth country after Russia, the United States, and China to conduct a controlled landing on the moon.
Vikram, the moon lander, is mounted atop a Mark 3 heavy-lift launch vehicle dubbed the Bahubali rocket.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the launch as a “new chapter” in India’s space voyage, saying it has elevated every Indian’s goals and objectives.
“Chandrayaan-3 scripts a new chapter in India’s space odyssey. It soars high, elevating the dreams and ambitions of every Indian,” PM Modi said in a tweet.
Chandrayaan-3: New Chapter In India’s Space Odyssey
The journey from Earth to the moon for the spacecraft is estimated to take about a month. The landing is expected on August 23. Upon landing, it will operate for one lunar day, which is approximately 29 Earth days.
The Chandrayaan-3 mission will consist of three primary components: a lander, a rover, and a propulsion model. It will use the Orbiter from Chandrayaan-2, which is still floating around in the lunar atmosphere.
In a first, India’s mooncraft ‘Vikram’ will arrive on the moon’s South Pole, where water molecules have been discovered. The discovery, made during India’s maiden moon trip in 2008, stunned the entire globe.
Vikram is supposed to land safely and softly. The lander will then release the rover Pragyan, which will cruise the moon’s surface. It will conduct scientific investigations for a lunar day.
The new Chandrayaan mission comes four years after a previous attempt failed. At that time the ground crew losing communication moments before landing.
The ISRO’s second lunar mission Chandrayaan-2 failed while attempting to land in 2019. However, to avoid past failures, ISRO has corporate a series of changes in the upcoming mission.
