Celina Jaitly expresses her disappointment regarding the Supreme Court verdict against same-sex marriages

On Tuesday, India’s Supreme Court, with a 3-2 majority, rejected the legal recognition of same-sex marriages in the country, delivering four judgments and various observations. In an interview with India Today, actress Celina Jaitly expressed her disappointment with the Court’s ruling, stating that the LGBT community is simply seeking the same rights enjoyed by all other Indian citizens. Jaitly, who has been an LGBT activist for two decades, conveyed her dissatisfaction with the decision.

Celina expressed, “The Supreme Court’s decision on marriage is truly disheartening. Throughout my 20-year journey as an LGBT activist, I’ve consistently emphasized that the LGBT community isn’t seeking a distinct set of rights. They’re merely advocating for the same rights afforded to all other Indian citizens. The right to marriage and family is one of the most fundamental human rights. I genuinely hope that Parliament will amend the Special Marriages Act to make it inclusive of all genders.”

The actor stated, “Positively, Court acknowledged its commitment to explore rights and privileges that can be extended to LGBTQ+ couples. I see this as a move in the right direction.

A five-judge Constitution bench, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, issued a 3:2 majority decision on Tuesday, rejecting the constitutional recognition of same-sex marriages. The Supreme Court stated that the responsibility to enact laws pertaining to this matter lies with the Parliament.

The panel, which included Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, S Ravindra Bhat, Hima Kohli, and PS Narasimha. He issued the verdict they had previously reserved on May 11 this year.

Some activists and members of LGBTQ+ community were anticipating a ruling in their favor, while others supported the Court’s decision. They believed that legalizing same-sex marriage could disrupt the social structure of the nation.
