Police deployed sniffer dogs and bomb disposal squads to the City Civil and Sessions Court and the Bankshall Court in Kolkata after officials received bomb threat emails claiming explosives had been planted inside the premises. Following the alerts, officials evacuated and searched at least six district courts across West Bengal, including two in Kolkata, on Tuesday afternoon. The security agencies carried out thorough checks, but they did not find any suspicious object or explosive device during the initial searches.
Similar bomb scare incidents occurred at several other courts, including the Chinsurah court in Hooghly district, the Asansol and Durgapur courts in West Burdwan district, and the Berhampore court in Murshidabad district. Authorities immediately ordered evacuations at these locations as a precautionary measure and conducted intensive search operations to ensure the safety of judicial officers, court staff, lawyers, and visitors.
West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal emphasized that the state government must ensure proper security arrangements for judicial officers who are participating in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. He said the state will protect the judges and ensure that such threats or security concerns do not disrupt the ongoing SIR process.

State Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty, Director General of Police Peeyush Pandey, and Kolkata Police Commissioner Supratim Sarkar addressed a press conference at Nabanna, the state secretariat, while the search operations were underway. Chakraborty stated that officials are investigating the source of the emails and noted that the threats followed a similar pattern. She assured that district judges continued their work and that the government was taking all necessary steps to safeguard them and maintain normal court operations.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Supratim Sarkar said the cyber crime wing is actively tracing the origin of the emails and promised strict action once the sender is identified. Meanwhile, Debaprasad Nath, the district judge of West Burdwan, confirmed that he ordered the evacuation of the Durgapur court as a preventive step to allow security teams to conduct the search efficiently. He added that authorities suspected the threats might be hoax messages but chose not to take any risk.
By 2 pm, police had not found any explosive device at any of the searched courts, but officials increased security at several other court complexes across the state due to the panic created by the incidents. Law enforcement agencies continued monitoring the situation closely and assured that they would take all necessary measures to prevent disruptions and maintain safety across judicial institutions.
