Internet Suspended in Karbi, Assam Anglong Amid Unrest

On Tuesday, December 23, 2025, the Assam government ordered the immediate suspension of internet and mobile data services in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts following a serious deterioration in law and order. This decision followed urgent reports from District Magistrates regarding growing tensions and the high likelihood of a breach of public peace. Authorities feared that individuals might misuse social media platforms to circulate inflammatory messages and rumors, further aggravating the volatile situation.

The unrest primarily stemmed from a violent conflict regarding the eviction of settlers from grazing lands, which resulted in arson and clashes that injured over 100 people. To restore order, the government deployed high-level officials, including the Director General of Police, and maintained the blackout for five days until the situation stabilized on December 28.

Assam Internet Suspended in Karbi

In a notification issued by Biswajit Pegu, Commissioner and Secretary of the Home and Political Department, the Assam government clarified that voice calls and fixed-line broadband services would continue to function during the suspension. The notification explicitly warned that authorities would punish any violators under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885.

To implement these restrictions, the government invoked its powers under Section 5(2) of the Indian Telegraph Act and the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services Rules, 2017. Officials emphasized that they took this immediate action to safeguard public peace and prevent the unrest in the two hill districts from escalating further.
