Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, announced on Friday that the appointments of Chief Justices for various High Courts, based on the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendations, are expected to occur soon. Following this statement, the bench led by the CJI postponed the hearing of petitions that requested the Union Government to promptly act on these Collegium recommendations.
As soon as the matter was taken, CJI told the petitioners’ lawyers that the matter could be posted after a week as some appointments are expected in the meanwhile.
A bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra was hearing a PIL seeking directions to the Centre to clear the collegium resolutions in a time-bound manner.
A contempt petition filed by the State of Jharkhand against the Centre over the delay in appointing the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court was also listed today.

Delays in Appointment of Chief Justices for High Courts: Background and Developments
On July 11, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended the appointment of Chief Justices for eight High Courts. However, these recommendations have remained pending with the Union Government without any formal approval or action.
In a hearing on September 13, the Attorney General (AG) informed the Court that he wished to present certain “sensitive information” concerning some of the pending recommendations made by the Collegium, implying that these details might be impacting the approval process.
Subsequently, on September 17, the Collegium revisited its recommendations and made revisions to three of its earlier proposals concerning the appointments of Chief Justices for various High Courts. This step reflects ongoing deliberations and the need for adjustments based on the discussions between the Collegium and the Union Government.
The situation remains under review, and the appointments are yet to be finalized.
