Parking Troubles in Mumbai? BMC Plans New App for a Solution

According to the budget, the traffic department will create a parking app that allows citizens to reserve vehicle slots in advance and make payments online for added convenience.

In its FY26 budget, BMC has prioritized sustainable urban development with initiatives focused on green spaces, enhanced healthcare infrastructure, traffic management, pedestrian-friendly measures, smart transportation, and an efficient parking system.

Apart from the parking app, BMC has outlined several measures to enhance traffic management and ease congestion across the metropolis as reported by Economic Times.

–Access Control Project: The foundation stone for this project was laid in October 2024 by the then chief minister of Maharashtra Eknath Shinde. Under this, work orders have been issued for the improvement of one junction on the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) and three junctions on the Western Express Highway (WEH). The work is currently in progress.

–Area Traffic Control (ATC) System: Implementation of ATC System at signal junctions in Greater Mumbai is in progress to improve traffic management.

–Walkability: Walkability of city involves condition of footpath, width of footpath, safety concerns, accessibility, routine maintenance, etc. Pedestrian friendly footpaths encourage Walkability of city which helps to improve health, reduces dependency on vehicles and helps in decongestion of traffic.

Traffic Chaos In Mumbai

Mumbaikars on a daily basis face traffic congestion. Meanwhile, the transport department has announced to shut Elphinstone road over bridge (ROB)– a key link between Parel and Prabhadevi over the Central and Western Railway tracks- for two years.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will dismantle and rebuild the Elphinstone bridge as part of the Sewri-Worli Connector project.

Elphinstone bridge will be the fifth British-era bridge in Mumbai to shut, following the closures of Sion ROB, Carnac Bridge, Bellasis Bridge, and Reay Road Bridge. Their closures have already led to severe traffic snarl-ups in the city.
