Nagpur will celebrate ‘Swachh Diwali, Shubh Diwali’ from October 21 to 31 as part of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) initiative, following directives from the Central Government. Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari has called on citizens to take part in various activities organized across all ten NMC zones. From October 21 to 24, a ‘Deep Clean Diwali’ campaign will be conducted in different wards.

‘Swachh Diwali, Shubh Diwali’ for Waste Collection and Recycling
NMC is lending a helping hand to citizens so that they can off load old and unrequired material from their homes. The idea is to gather the discarded material from homes and offices and if suitable, send it for recycling, stated Municipal Commissioner Dr AbhijeetChaudhari on Monday at NMC Headquarters.
For the same, ‘Swachh Diwali Shubh Diwali’ campaign has been launched for the first time by NMC. The underlying theme is to keep the surroundings clean and also solve major problems faced by citizens as to dumping the unrequired material from their premises. NMC has decided to receive segregated material, like old clothes, newspapers, plastic material, broken furniture, e-waste and other such things at their centres that would be located in each of the Prabhag.
Adding to the concept, Additional Municipal Commissioner Anchal Goyal (In-charge Health Department), said that most of the time post cleaning the unrequired material gets dumped into streets. So to provide an easy solution, NMC has tied up with recyclers to properly dispose of the material. She requested citizens to segregate the material at their end only to avoid time and help keep their centers clean. Preferably, clothes and other material that can be recycled should only be handed over.
NMC’s Diwali Campaign to Promote Cleanliness, Recycling, and Eco-Friendly Celebrations
On Oct 25, cleanliness campaigns will be held at all 19 crematoriums. From Oct 26 to 28, waste collected during Diwali cleaning will be gathered at NMC’s Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (RRR) centres.
On Oct 27, sanitation workers will be honoured for their efforts, and on Oct 28, 59 statues of prominent figures will be cleaned. Oct 29 and 30 will see households encouraged to use decorative lamps and make rangolis conveying cleanliness messages. The NMC’s information, education, and communication (IEC) team will promote eco-friendly Diwali celebrations in markets.
In addition, NMC has set up 130 waste collection centres across the city, where citizens can deposit recyclable items such as clothes, e-waste, and plastic. Those who actively participate will receive ‘Thank You’ stickers on their homes, recognising their efforts. The collected waste will be processed by NGOs, turning it into useful products, according to Deputy Commissioner Dr Gajendra Mahalle.
“This campaign aims to engage citizens in maintaining cleanliness during the festive season while promoting sustainable practices and ‘Vocal for Local’ initiatives,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner Aanchal Goyal.
After Diwali, a special cleanliness drive in the open ground too will be organised from Nov 4 to Nov 7.
