Central Railway Disruption: Girder Glitch Halts Services Between Thane and Airoli

A technical snag involving a girder halted train services between Thane and Airoli on Mumbai’s Trans-Harbour line today, leaving thousands of daily commuters stranded during peak hours. The Central Railway authorities confirmed that they detected the glitch early in the morning and immediately suspended services on the affected stretch to prevent any safety hazards.

Officials reported that a construction girder near the tracks had shifted slightly, prompting engineers to inspect and secure the structure before resuming operations. Authorities rushed technical teams to the site and began repair work without delay.

Commuters Face Heavy Delays and Chaos

The disruption triggered massive delays across the Central Railway network. Trains from Vashi, Nerul, and Belapur to Thane came to a standstill, causing overcrowding on alternative routes like Kurla and Dadar. Many office-goers took to social media to express their frustration, while some opted for buses and taxis despite inflated fares.

Railway officials advised passengers to avoid non-essential travel along the affected corridor and announced temporary arrangements. “We are working round-the-clock to restore normalcy. Passenger safety remains our top priority,” a Central Railway spokesperson said.

The incident exposed the vulnerability of Mumbai’s suburban infrastructure and raised concerns about maintenance and construction protocols. Officials have ordered a detailed technical audit of ongoing bridge and girder projects in the region to prevent similar issues in the future.

Train services partially resumed on the up line by late afternoon, but full restoration may take a few more hours, according to the latest railway update. Meanwhile, stranded commuters continue to demand faster crisis management and better contingency planning.
