Ashwin Slams Hardik as MI Captaincy Debate Heats Up

Ravichandran Ashwin voiced strong views on the captaincy situation at Mumbai Indians ahead of the Indian Premier League 2026 season. He said the franchise should appoint Suryakumar Yadav as captain instead of Hardik Pandya. Ashwin highlighted that the current leadership decision raises concerns. He shared these remarks on his YouTube channel.

Ashwin pointed to Suryakumar’s recent achievements to support his argument. He noted that Suryakumar currently leads India in T20Is and guided the team to the T20 World Cup 2026 title. He stressed that his leadership credentials make him an obvious choice for MI captaincy. He added that delaying this decision remains surprising.

MI leadership under spotlight as Ashwin pitches Suryakumar for captaincy role

At the same time, Ashwin acknowledged Hardik Pandya’s leadership record. He recalled that Pandya led Gujarat Titans to a title in their debut season and a runner-up finish the next year. He said Pandya proved his ability as a captain during that period. He also noted that expectations rose significantly after his move to Mumbai.

Ashwin explained that Pandya faced a challenging environment during his first season with MI. He said the transition from Rohit Sharma created pressure and constant scrutiny. He added that comparisons with Suryakumar’s current India captaincy role further complicate matters. He described the situation as mentally demanding for Pandya.

Despite the criticism, Ashwin backed Pandya to succeed with the right support. He said the captain needs freedom from external pressure and strong backing from the team management. He expressed confidence in Pandya’s ability to lead effectively under better conditions. MI will begin their IPL 2026 campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders on March 29.
