Supreme Court Grants Bail to Arun Gawli
The Supreme Court granted bail to Arun Gawli after considering the long years he spent in custody. Gawli had been convicted in 2012 under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act by a special court. The bench noted that he had already completed over half of his life sentence behind bars. His defense lawyers argued that denying bail further would violate his constitutional rights and natural justice. Accepting the plea, the apex court ordered his release with strict bail conditions.
Political and Social Reactions
Arun Gawli’s return sparked celebrations among his supporters but also raised concerns in political and social circles. Dagdi Chawl, his traditional stronghold in Mumbai, saw fireworks, slogans, and sweets distributed by loyal followers. Critics, however, questioned whether bail to a convicted gangster could affect public confidence in the system. Political observers said Gawli still holds influence in several pockets of Maharashtra, particularly Mumbai and Nagpur. Security agencies have increased vigilance to monitor his activities and ensure peace remains undisturbed.
