App Cab Drivers Call for ‘Chakka Jam’ in Mumbai, Pune & Nagpur on July 23

App-based cab drivers in Maharashtra have issued a firm warning to the state government, announcing plans for a massive ‘Chakka Jam’ protest across Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur on Wednesday, July 23, if their long-standing demands are not addressed during a crucial meeting scheduled for Tuesday, July 22.

The threat of a citywide shutdown comes amid an ongoing indefinite hunger strike led by gig workers’ union leader Dr. Keshav Nana Kshirsagar, who completed the fourth day of his fast on Monday in support of the cab drivers’ rights.

In a statement released Monday, Dr. Kshirsagar said, “We had temporarily paused the indefinite strike on July 19 to allow the government time to respond and postponed the shutdown until July 23. However, if the government once again fails to fulfill its promises tomorrow, the protests will escalate.”

The union has accused the government of repeatedly making empty promises and delaying decisive action on critical issues, including fare regulation, commission caps, and social security provisions for gig workers and cab drivers.

Dr. Kshirsagar further warned that if the meeting on Tuesday does not meet their expectations, the protest will move beyond symbolic actions. “From July 23 onwards, we will initiate ‘Chakka Jam’ across Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur,” he stated.

This announcement has raised concerns about potential disruptions for commuters in Maharashtra’s busiest cities. As of now, government officials have not issued an official response regarding the protest threat.
