With the Supreme Court approving OBC reservation in local body elections in Maharashtra, the political equation in Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is set to change. Now, there will be 23% OBC reservation in municipal elections. According to NMC officials, OBC candidates will get 35 seats in the next civic polls.
Officials said as per the decision of the apex court, the reservation will be no more than 50%.
Sources said the situation may change again as the Eknath Shinde-led state government is thinking of retaining the four-member ward system. The NMC elections in 2017 were held on per four-member ward basis.
During the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government regime, a three-member ward system was declared for the upcoming municipal elections to be held this year. The number of wards in the city increased to 52 from 38 and the number of members too increased from 151 to 156.
