Vivek Ramaswamy Loses Ohio Governor Race as Democrat Amy Acton Wins

New Delhi: Democrat Amy Acton defeated Indian-origin Republican Vivek Ramaswamy in Ohio’s gubernatorial election on Tuesday. Her victory marks a historic breakthrough for Democrats after two decades without winning statewide.

Acton also becomes the first woman elected governor in Ohio’s history. Acton overcame more than $100 million spent against her during the campaign. Ramaswamy and his allies invested heavily in their effort to secure victory. Billionaire Elon Musk contributed at least $5 million to a political action committee supporting Ramaswamy. Ramaswamy’s campaign also faced criticism over an advertisement targeting Acton’s family background. The advertisement featured comments from Acton’s estranged mother, sparking widespread political controversy. Her mother had lost custody of her children decades earlier. The family experienced further trauma after authorities indicted Acton’s stepfather for raping her during childhood.

Ramaswamy’s Campaign Faces Backlash Over Personal Attack Advertisement

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine criticised the advertisement alongside several political figures. President Donald Trump praised the advertisement, while Vice President JD Vance defended it. The controversy attracted attention from both Republican and Democratic leaders. Despite these attacks, Acton maintained her campaign’s focus on everyday economic concerns. She promised voters better healthcare access and greater affordability across Ohio. The public health physician previously served as Ohio’s state health director during COVID-19. She highlighted her difficult childhood to connect with working-class voters. Acton described experiencing homelessness and spending one winter living inside a tent.

Meanwhile, Ramaswamy urged voters to support his economic and public safety promises. He pledged lower property taxes, cheaper electricity and more affordable housing. He also promised safer streets and urged voters to hold him accountable. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine will leave office because of constitutional term limits. He plans to retire after spending five decades in elected politics. Acton will lead Ohio’s executive branch despite never holding elected public office. Her victory could reshape Democratic prospects in a traditionally competitive state. Ohio has increasingly supported Republicans during the Trump era. Acton’s win offers Democrats a significant statewide electoral breakthrough.
