The Uttar Pradesh government has introduced special free bus travel facilities for women to mark Raksha Bandhan. Women can travel without paying a fare on Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) buses from 6 AM on August 27 until midnight on August 29. The initiative also allows each woman to travel with one companion during the festival period. The government aims to make it easier for women to visit their families and celebrate Raksha Bandhan with their loved ones.

Free Travel Facility During Raksha Bandhan
The government has directed UPSRTC officials to ensure the smooth and effective implementation of the three-day initiative. Authorities will also promote the scheme so that more eligible women become aware of the benefit. By offering free transportation, the state hopes to reduce travel expenses during the festive season. The move will especially support women travelling long distances to meet their brothers and family members. The initiative reflects the government’s continued focus on improving convenience and mobility for women.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has also launched the Lokmata Ahilyabai Matrushakti Yatra scheme for women aged 60 years and above. Under this initiative, eligible senior women will receive free lifetime travel on UPSRTC buses. The Chief Minister launched the scheme in Lucknow by flagging off special buses and interacting with elderly women beneficiaries. Eligible women can access the facility by showing their Aadhaar card or Voter ID card to the bus conductor. The scheme aims to provide senior women with greater independence and easier access to public transportation.

Lokmata Ahilyabai Matrushakti Yatra for Senior Women
The state government expects the new initiative to improve mobility and support the daily travel needs of elderly women. Senior citizens can use the free travel facility for essential work, social visits and other important journeys. The Chief Minister also highlighted the government’s wider efforts towards women’s welfare through programmes related to education, housing, nutrition, pensions and employment. These initiatives aim to strengthen financial support and independence among women across different age groups. The government believes the schemes will create meaningful benefits for women throughout Uttar Pradesh.
The free travel benefits will provide timely support to women celebrating Raksha Bandhan and offer long-term assistance to senior women. The festival scheme will help women travel more conveniently to meet their families without worrying about transportation costs. Meanwhile, the lifetime facility for women above 60 will make regular public travel more affordable and accessible. Together, the two initiatives focus on improving freedom of movement and strengthening women’s welfare. The Uttar Pradesh government expects a large number of women to benefit from these transport-focused schemes.
