A tsunami wave of 80 cm hit Kuji port in Iwate Prefecture at 5:34 pm (local time), Japan’s Meteorological Agency (JMA) said. Earlier, officials recorded a 70 cm wave at 5:32 pm, while another port in the region saw a smaller 40 cm surge. These back-to-back readings showed a steady rise in sea levels after the powerful earthquake, increasing concern among authorities and coastal residents.
Authorities then issued tsunami warnings for Iwate, Aomori, and southeastern Hokkaido, while they placed Miyagi and Fukushima under a milder advisory. Officials closely monitored coastal activity and warned that waves up to 3 metres could still reach some areas. They urged residents to stay alert and follow evacuation instructions as conditions continued to change.
Tsunami alerts after quake
A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the Sanriku coast in northern Japan at around 4:53 pm (local time). The quake occurred at a shallow depth beneath the Pacific Ocean, which increased the risk of strong surface shaking and possible tsunami formation. People across nearby regions felt the tremors, which quickly triggered emergency response measures.
Authorities urged coastal residents to evacuate immediately and move to higher ground. Emergency teams, including disaster response units and local officials, prepared to handle possible damage and casualties. Monitoring systems tracked aftershocks and sea-level changes to keep the public informed in real time.

Strong tremors forced officials to halt bullet train services in Aomori as a safety precaution. Railway authorities began inspecting tracks and infrastructure before allowing services to resume. The disruption affected travel schedules and caused delays for commuters across the region.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced the formation of an emergency task force to manage the situation. She urged citizens to remain in safe areas and follow official instructions without delay.
