Washington: US President Donald Trump faces difficult choices after voters delivered a major setback to Republicans. Democrats gained control of Congress following the midterm elections, weakening Trump’s political position in Washington.
The results have increased pressure on Trump to negotiate an exit from the conflict. However, escalating military action against Iran remains another possibility, raising concerns across the Gulf region. “Iran succeeded in regime change in America,” a source close to a US Gulf ally told Reuters. The source said Gulf officials felt stunned by the Democrats’ sweeping electoral victory. The conflict began on February 28 with US-Israeli strikes against Iranian targets. Iran retaliated with missiles and drones targeting Gulf countries and shipping routes through Hormuz. The fighting disrupted global energy supplies and damaged Iran’s military capabilities without resolving nuclear concerns. Trump now faces congressional opposition that could restrict his military options against Tehran.

Republicans consequently have stronger incentives to pursue negotiations and avoid another prolonged military confrontation. Gulf officials believe a full-scale American assault has become less likely. Limited strikes against nuclear facilities could nevertheless help Washington claim progress and justify ending hostilities. China has also increased diplomatic efforts to broker an agreement between the opposing sides. However, negotiations remain difficult because neither government wants to appear politically defeated. Trump could maintain the naval blockade and economic sanctions while continuing negotiations with Tehran. This strategy could weaken Iran economically, although meaningful results might require several months.
Meanwhile, Trump’s electoral considerations have changed following the midterm defeat. Without another presidential election ahead, he may focus increasingly on securing his political legacy. Saudi analyst Abdulaziz Sager believes Trump could pursue military action to secure a decisive outcome. Meanwhile, Iranian leaders remain cautious despite celebrating Trump’s electoral setback. Tehran fears Washington could launch another strike to recover its political and diplomatic leverage. Gulf governments want an agreement that guarantees shipping freedom through the Strait of Hormuz. They also oppose arrangements that expose regional countries to renewed Iranian military threats. Ultimately, Trump’s decision will depend on Tehran’s negotiating position and Washington’s appetite for escalation. The coming months could determine whether diplomacy ends the conflict or another confrontation follows.
