West Bengal Cabinet Led by Suvendu Ends Religion-Based Schemes in Key Decision

The West Bengal cabinet approved several welfare measures during its second meeting under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Ministers announced financial assistance of Rs 3,000 for eligible women across the state beginning from June 1. The government also approved free bus travel facilities for women as part of its election commitments. Officials confirmed that women already receiving benefits under the Lakshmi Bhandar scheme would automatically qualify. The administration plans to launch a separate online portal for women currently excluded from existing welfare programmes.

The cabinet also decided to discontinue religion-based assistance schemes operated through two state government departments. Officials stated that programmes managed under the Madarsa Department and Information and Cultural Department would gradually end. However, the government allowed currently active projects under both departments to continue until this month concludes. Ministers explained that the administration wanted to ensure a smooth transition before officially ending those welfare schemes. The cabinet presented these decisions as part of broader policy reforms promised during the recent election campaign.

The state government officially launched the Annapurna Yojana to provide direct financial support for women beneficiaries statewide. Under this scheme, eligible women will receive Rs 3,000 assistance every month starting from June 1. Ministers claimed the programme fulfilled a major promise mentioned prominently in the Bharatiya Janata Party election manifesto. Officials stated that the administration would simplify application procedures through digital systems for women seeking enrollment benefits. Government representatives also described the welfare programme as an important step toward improving financial independence among women.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari also conducted his first janata darbar after assuming office earlier this month. The public interaction programme took place at a Bharatiya Janata Party office located in Salt Lake area. Students, local residents, and party supporters attended the session and directly presented their concerns before the chief minister. Party leaders stated that Adhikari intends to organise such public grievance meetings regularly across different regions statewide. Officials described the initiative as an effort to improve communication between the administration and ordinary citizens effectively.

The West Bengal BJP highlighted several administrative decisions taken during the government’s first week in office recently. Party leaders claimed the new administration delivered visible governance changes faster than the previous Trinamool Congress government. In a social media post, BJP leaders praised the “double engine government” for initiating reforms immediately after assuming power. The party also pointed toward welfare announcements, public hearings, and transportation benefits as examples of quick administrative action. Political observers believe the government will continue using these initiatives to strengthen public support throughout the state.
